First scientific results of mobile LIDAR revealed at international symposium
The SERA Remote Sensing Fous Area Team presented the first scientific results of the CSIR-NLC Mobile LIDAR, as part of its Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) project. The paper was presented as part of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Cape Town. The CSIR's mobile LIDAR system was designed and developed to contribute towards atmospheric research in South Africa and African countries.

Creating a new educational programme for Africa
The University of Pretoria Water Institute (UPWI) that evolved from the SERA Water Focus Area Team, launched a new MSc degree in Water Resource Management. The degree is jointly offered by the University of Pretoria and the Georgia Institute of Technology's Georgia Water Research Institute, in Atlanta USA. This educational and applied research programme - called AWARE - combines the expertise and strengths of the two water institutes and aims to create qualified human resources that will ably serve African governments, industries, and academia.

SERA Relationship Manager re-elected to lead national science academy
SERA Relationship Manager for the University of Pretoria (UP), Professor Robin Crewe - Vice-Principal: Research and Post-graduate Studies at UP - has been re-elected to serve a two-year term as President of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF). ASSAF is a statutory body that aims to use science for the benefit of society and represents South Africa in the international community of science academies. Prof Crewe was first elected President of ASSAF in 2006 and the organisation affirmed its confidence in him by re-electing him to the position at its 2008 annual general meeting.

ACGT partners participate in SABINA science and education regional initiative
Three partner institutions of the African Centre for Gene Technologies (ACGT) - the University of the Witwatersrand, the University of Pretoria, and the CSIR - have been selected as part of the six institutions participating in the Southern African Biochemistry and Informatics for Natural Products (SABINA) Network Programme. The Programme is funded through the Carnegie-IAS Regional Initiative in Science and Education. The SABINA network includes the Universities of Malawi, Namibia, and Dar es Salaam.
