SERA partner - the CSIR - will hold its biennial conference showcasing Science and technology (S&T) initiatives that contribute to national priorities from 31 August to 1 September 2010. The open conference, titled 'Science Real and Relevant', will be held at the CSIR International Convention Centre in Pretoria.
The objective of the conference is to share the CSIR's research progress, breakthroughs, and impact in an open forum. This year, the conference will be shaped around the areas in which the CSIR believes it is equipped to fulfil its mandate to improve the quality of life of South Africans through industrial and scientific development. These research impact areas are health, energy, defence and security, natural environment, built environment and industry.
The event will present an ideal platform for SERA participants already involved in these impact areas to learn, share knowledge and identify unexplored synergies between the Alliance's partner institutions. A mix of projects will be presented, from early breakthroughs to projects where positive outcomes have been achieved, with good indications of a longer-term impact.
The conference will feature CSIR researchers, as well as local and international opinion leaders who will contextualise and probe topics, with the aim of creating an opportunity for:
- The private sector to hear about research that could help strengthen industry's competitive edge;
- Stakeholders in government to gain a better understanding of the role of research in looking for solutions to some of the country's pressing needs;
- The academic sector to engage with their peers about contributions to the global knowledge pool and opportunities for collaboration.
Registration for the conference opens on 16 April 2010. While no fees are involved, booking is essential.
